Lack of transportation is the greatest barrier to health care and the maintenance of an independent life style that many older adults and people with disabilities face. TRIP is an award-winning supplemental transportation program, operated throughout Riverside County, since 1993, by the nonprofit Independent Living Partnership.
encourages volunteer ride-sharing with people who would otherwise be homebound and isolated. Persons, old or young, with disabilities or without, may be said to fall into 2 categories:
1. Those who are transportation-rich –
a. Drive;
b. have family members to help them;
c. or are able to access and use public transportation as needed.
2. Those who are transportation-deprived –
a. Don’t drive, don’t have a car,
b. and don’t have family members who drive them around when they need to travel,
c. and are unable to access and use public transportation.
The first thing that we do is to assess the needs of the population, through our partnership with the Office on Aging HelpLink. Through this one-on-one consultation service, callers to 1-800-510-2020 are informed and educated about the services that are available in their area. They are sent brochures, route schedules and instructed on how to apply for American Disability Act certification by public transportation agencies. They are also screened and, if predetermined to have special needs, are referred to the TRIP Program for service evaluation.
If you know of people in Riverside County,
who may require TRIP Assisted Transportation,
or who would like to apply to serve as a volunteer escort and driver,
ask them to call the TRIP Program at 1-800-510-2020…….
