Tai Chi and Qi Gong Creating Health Revolution

         by Solange Silverman

"Tai Chi, " pronounced "ty chee," in Chinese means the "great ultimate" and is indeed the ultimate exercise.  It is changing people's lives for the better worldwide and is creating a revolution in health and exercise.  Its popularity in the U.S. is growing very quickly.  This is due to the tremendous health benefits it affords for mind, body and soul.  It is the only exercise that will ever be needed in a person's life span, which may be increased by it.

What is Tai Chi?  Tai Chi is the slow, graceful, exercise originating in China that has been practiced there for over 1000 years.  Tai Chi involves a series of movements that together create a continuous, flowing sequence of elegant motion.  Its regimen is designed to heal and strengthen all internal organs, joints, glands and muscles.  It helps to promote the natural flow of "chi" or "energy" in the body.  In its movements, muscle groups are exercised, and it is important that the mind focus on the sequences of movement.  Everything is exercised. Even those who practice other exercises and sports feel the exercise in new and different parts of the body.  Done slowly, it is a moving meditation for mind and body.  It enhances the mind and body connection.  Done quickly, it is a self-defense art.  Its movements are the source of several of the martial arts.  Because it is done slowly, the risk of injury is decreased.

The benefits of Tai Chi include increased strength, flexibility and stamina, improved cardiovascular function and improved balance and coordination.  It is also a tonic for organs and glands.  It helps promote the body's natural healing energy.  It reshapes the body and enhances self-awareness, relaxation, mental organization, personal direction, confidence, discipline and dynamic thinking and increases energy.  Tai Chi increases longevity and creates a healthy body with which to enjoy it.  Tai Chi requires no special equipment or gym.  It may be practiced anywhere.  It is traditionally done twice a day for at least twenty minutes each time.  U.S. health officials now recognize how Tai Chi can aid in preventing stress, heart disease and lower blood pressure.

Tai Chi is derivative of Qi, pronounced "chee," Gong, which in Chinese means "energy cultivation."  Qi Gong exercises cultivate the internal and external, stillness and movement.  Its three components are posture, breathing and the mind.  It is based on the energy anatomy of the body's meridian system and energy points.  Qi Gong affects and exercises the three important areas of the body, the lower section, the middle and the upper section.  Like Tai Chi, it cultivates the organs, tissues and body functions as well as its mental and spiritual ones, strengthening all.  Tai Chi and Qi Gong are rooted in Chinese Taoism, which is a spiritual practice based on observing and aligning with nature and the organic order of things.

Tai Chi classes, combined with Qi Gong exercises, are taught by the Tai Chi Institute Director, Noel Pittman, and are currently offered at several times and locations in the Coachella Valley.  Many are especially designed and adapted for the elderly and those with special health problems.  Classes modify and adapt for participants with health issues such as arthritis.  Some are especially geared to the elderly and are held at senior centers.  Tai Chi strengthens the body, improving coordination and balance so as to prevent falling, which can be a major concern among older people.

Institute Director and Head instructor, Noel Pittman, has over 30 years of experience.  He is an excellent, gifted and dedicated teacher, who is passionate about working with his students.  He has studied under venerable teacher, Pao Peter Lee, of the Flower Drum Restaurant in Palm Springs.
